In 2023, there was this event that my family signed up for, which was called BB cares. We were tasked to give hampers filled with food and daily necessities to the less fortunate. We collected these hampers from my school, along with a list of the beneficiaries, and began driving around Singapore to deliver. Throughout the day, I noticed the living areas that these beneficiaries were living in. Some were dirty and disorganized, while other people kept their lights off just to save money on the electricity bill.
The joy when the beneficiaries received the hamper was quite noticeable, and hopefully made their day. One prominent memory I have of that day was delivering the hamper to a 88 year old lady. She was living alone in a single room HDB flat, with no one taking care of her. I was able to talk to her for a bit, and was rewarded with little stories on her life. I hope I was able to make a positive impact on her, even though I had only met her for a short while.
This event had allowed me to understand truly how fortunate my life is, as well as learning how to emphatise more for others around me, despite their background or circumstance. I'm grateful for this opportunity to serve the community and I hope that I played a part in giving back to the society that has been my home and country for my life.
